THIS is the story of one Francis Delaney
A journeyman fighter of not much renown
PLUCKED from a glass in a Whitechapel boozer
Thrown to a fight he could never have won
LIED to and flattered by crooked eyed men
And told he could beat an unbeatable foe
SLAPPED on the back and pushed to the frontline
And paraded as boxing’s last great hope
ONE little pinch of the old fight nerves
And the muscles awaken and tighten anew
ONE more sip of the whiskey in front of you
Warm glow courage slips down the throat
NOT that he needed a lot of encouragement
This was the chance he’d been lingering for
YEARS as a punch bag, still had his stuffing
And this whole fucking town was about to bow
